NCL Norwegian Spirit in the Bahamas

Norwegian Spirit Cruise Ship

The Norwegian Spirit is an interesting ship. It started its life as the SuperStar Leo from Star Cruises in 1999 serving the Asian market.

However, in 2004, a NCL ship called the Pride of America partially sank during construction in Germany. This set off a chain reaction of NCL ships being needed for other planned routes, and finally they were one ship short.

Star Cruises, the parent company of Norwegian Cruise Line, refitted the SuperStar Leo and renamed it the Norwegian Spirit.

One interesting thing about the Norwegian Spirit is that they left the Asian influences for the most part. The decor throughout the ship is Chinese-influenced and there is even a mah-jongg room. Many of the restaurants are Asian influenced too.

Sun Princess in Vancouver On World Tour

Here is the Princess Cruises Sun Princess ship waiting to head to Alaska here in Vancouver. However, this is not a normal Vancouver – Alaska cruise.

The Sun Princess is the sister of the Dawn Princess and the Sea Princess.  It was built in 1995.

The most critical fact you need to know is that it was the setting for the 1998 TV show Love Boat: The Next Wave starring the incomperable Robert Urich.

At 77,000 tonnes and 857 feet it is not the largest Princess ship (anymore).

The Sun Princess is permanently based in Australia, sailing out of Sydney in the winter and Melbourne in the summer.

You might ask what an Australian based ship is doing in Vancouver?

It’s in the middle of a 75 night “Grand Pacific World Cruise”. Among other stops, it goes from Sydney to Hawaii, to San Francisco, then Victoria and Vancouver, then up to Alaska, then over to Japan, China, Vietnam, down to Singapore, and then finally back to Sydney.

Have you been on a cruise that long? I can’t imagine it personally.  Leave a comment with what you think about that, or if you have been on the Sun Princess or any other Princess ship.

As a bonus, here is the theme to Love Boat: The Next Wave.  Quality Television!

Cunard Queen Victoria Cruise Ship in Sydney

Just in case you are bored of the Vancouver cruise ships, here is the Queen Victoria docked in Sydney.

Not sure what they are saying exactly, but I dig the music.

The Cunard Queen Victoria travels all over the world, from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe to the Carribean.

The Queen Victoria is 964.5 feet long and 90,000 tonnes. It has 990 staterooms and has room for 2,000 passengers.

The cruise ship is going for elegance, so it has the Royal Court Theatre with private boxes, and a two-storey library.

Of course, with all this luxury comes the “Camilla curse”. Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, failed to smash the bottle of bubbly in the naming ceremony, and in its maiden voyage 78 passengers came down with the norovirus bug.

Coincidence? You decide. If you’ve been on the Queen V or any other Cunard ship, let us know how you liked it in the comments.
