This is a guest post from Ed Radonic at Blogging Aboard Black Diamond

Hi dude, got some more pics to come. I am cruising on Black Diamond, passed Cape Canaveral and got a few pics of the Monarach of the Seas, with Black Diamond in the fore ground, then a few more in Nassua, Bahamas as I sailed by the Disney cruise ship. See my other share/review.

I don’t normally post about ships that are still in construction, but I came across this cool (though not terribly high quality) footage of what looks to be a very cool ship, the MS Oasis of the Seas from Royal Caribbean.

The Oasis of the Seas will be launching in late 2009 and is currently under construction in Turku, Finland.

The ship will be 1,181 feet in length and 220,000 gross tonnes. It is estimated to cost 1.2 billion USD to build.

She will hold 5,400 passengers and have 2,700 staterooms.

The Oasis of the Seas is going to have a pretty innovative concept. It will be divided into “neighborhoods”:

  • Boardwalk
  • Royal Promenade
  • Central Park (!)
  • Spa and Fitness Center
  • Pool and Sports Zone
  • Entertainment Place
  • Youth Zone

I am really interested to see how they will pull off the Central Park one.

I’ll definitely be watching out for this and updating once it sails in late 2009. Does anyone here already have bookings on her?

2010 Update: Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas is complete. It boasts an entire deck of pools, rock-climbing walls, and basketball courts. 28 ultra-modern loft suites and 2,700 spacious staterooms. 16 decks.

Amenities: Spa, gym, fitness classes, 4 pools, 10 whirlpools, onboard mini-golf and zip line. Casino, live entertainment, dining options. Family friendly, activities for teens.

Today, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Oasis of the Seas sails for 5, 7, and 9 night cruises in both Eastern and Western Caribbean hot spots. Look for her ports of call in the tags below.

A grey Vancouver day and the Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas is at Canada Place getting ready to head off to Alaska.

The Rhapsody’s maiden voyage was in 1997. Most of the time it sails out of ports along the Gulf Coast to the Western Caribbean, but like many other ships it hits Alaska in the summer.

It’s 915 feet in length and weighs 78,491 tonnes. It holds 765 crew and 2,435 passengers.

Rhapsody of the Seas has a retractable canopy and an indoor/outdoor pool with a sliding roof.

It also has a cool rock climbing wall that you can see at the end of the video.

If you’ve been on the Rhapsody of the Seas or any other Royal Caribbean cruise, leave a comment and let us know how you liked it.

Update: Over on Youtube, jazzamcc pointed out that I made a mistake.  Rhapsody of the Seas now sails out of Australia & New Zealand from October – April.  Thanks a lot!
