Carnival Freedom in Italy and Rhodes, Greece

Welcome to DockedCruise.com. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Here we have the Carnival Freedom, a Carnival Cruise line ship that is of the Conquest class.

The Freedom’s maiden voyage was in March 2007.

In the summer she sails out of Rome to the Mediterranean and Greek Isles. Here is a video from Rhodes:

The Carnival Freedom is 110,000 gross tinnes and 952 feet in length, so not a small ship by any means. It has a guest capacity of 2974 and has 1487 staterooms.

One feature of the Freedom is a giant LED screen near the Lido deck. Here is a shot of that:

One last tidbit about the Carnival Freedom.. her “godmother” is former supermodel Kathy Ireland. Not entirely sure what a ship’s godmother does but there you go.

Crystal Symphony in New York and Montreal

Ed Radonic from the Blogging Aboard Black Diamond blog is taking a pretty awesome trip. He and his family purchased a sailboat called the Black Diamond and are in the process of sailing from Toronto to the Bahamas.

The first leg of their journey was from Toronto to New York City, and now they are on the second leg of their journey, having just reached Florida from New York.

While leaving New York, they took this great picture of the Crystal Symphony docked in Manhattan.

They just finished enduring a 36 hour tropical storm, so it will be interesting to see what else they get up to. Make sure you check out Ed’s blog.

The Crystal Symphony was launched in 1995 and is 51,044 tonnes and 781 feet in length. It has a passenger capacity of 940.

The ship recently went through a $23 million refurbishment and has a Feng Shui-inspired spa (wonder what that means?), a 360 degree teak promenade deck, and a cool Sunday jazz brunch.

One thing about Crystal is they do assigned seating and tablemates, so that may or may not be an issue for you. It also has fairly limited kids facilities, so I wouldn’t confuse it with a Disney ship.

The Symphony has quite a range, sailing in Mexico/the Caribbean, then heading over to the Mediterranean, then around Scandinavia/Russia, then back to North America.

Here’s another shot of the Crystal Symphony in Montreal.

Disney Magic in Mexico, Caymans, and Barcelona

You knew it was only a matter of time until there was a Disney Cruise Lines ship here.

DisneyMagicCayman.jpg

The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are the two ships of the Disney Cruise Lines fleet. Disney actually started doing cruises on an older ship from the Premier Cruises fleet. It was a huge success and Disney commissioned 2 new ships. That’s a pretty incredible investment!

The two ships are very similar, but I will focus on the Magic here.

The Disney Magic’s maiden voyage was in July 1998, from Port Canaveral Florida. It was built in Italy, and the bow and stern were built 100 miles from each other. The two sections were (obviously) welded together later.

It’s 83,000 gross tonnes and 964 feet in length. It has a capacity of 2,400 passengers and 945 crew.

While the Disney Cruises appeal to all ages, obviously it is a bit more geared to the younger set. If you are someone that doesn’t like kids, the Magic is not for you. Another thing to note is that there is no casino onboard. Most people don’t miss it because there is so much to do, but its something to be aware of for sure.

In 2008 and 2009 the Disney Magic sails out of Port Canaveral and does Western and Eastern Caribbean itineraries. If you want to do the Caribbean on the Magic though you’d better act fast. In 2010 it is heading back to Europe and doing the Mediterranean and Northern Europe (!). So if you want to go to Rome, Florence, Nice, Malta, Tunis, Oslo, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, or others the Disney way, now’s your chance.

Here are some pics and a cool video at the end.

Here is a cool video. In 2007 the Disney Magic was based out of Barcelona doing the Mediterranean. Let’s just say it arrived in style!

Independence of the Seas in Oslo

IndependenceShip.jpg

The MS Independence of the Seas is Freedom class ship from Royal Caribbean International which started service in April 2008.

Right now it is based in Southampton UK, but the pictures in this post were taken in Oslo Norway where it had some preview sailings.

During the summer the Independence mostly sails from Southampton to the Mediterranean, but during the winter I guess they figured out that no one wants to sail from the UK in the cold so the ship is based in Fort Lauderdale doing the usual Caribbean routes.

The Independence of the Seas is a huge ship at 160,000 tonnes and 1112 feet in length. It has a passenger capacity of 3,634.

It has the some cool features like an ice skating rink, a boxing ring, and a very popular H20 Zone water park.

Here are some more pics from the Independence in Oslo, Norway.

Carnival Victory in the Caribbean

The Carnival Victory is one of the Destiny Class ships that starts with a 9 story atrium right when you enter.

It was launched in 2000 in New York.

You can see it here, along with the Carnival Glory, in St. Maarten.

The Carnival Victory is 893 feet in length and weighs 101,509 tonnes. It holds 2,758 passengers and has 1,379 staterooms, 480 of them with private balconies.

The ship has its various bars and restaurants themed after the oceans and seas of the world, so you might be eating in the Caribbean Lounce or the Atlantic Dining Room or hitting the Indian Library.

The 24 hour pizza is also a hit.

The Victory will be sailing out of San Juan, Puerto Rico and doing 7 day cruises around the Southern Caribbean in late 2008/2009.

Carnival ships are called the “Fun Ships” and here is a video that I think shows that.

Golden Princess in Maui (But Not In Maui)

I was recently in Maui staying near Lahaina on the West coast of the island. (It was my first trip to Hawaii and was great by the way).

Moored off-shore during my stay were quite a few cruise ships. I wasn’t able to get a good video of them, but here is the Golden Princess anyways (note I couldn’t actually find any pics of it in Lahaina itself so these are from all over).

The Golden Princess is one of the Grand Class of ships for Princess cruiselines. It entered service in 2001 and was Christened by Dr. Quinn herself, Jane Seymour.

It mostly operates on the Mexican Riviera and the West coast of the US and Canada. This particular trip that I saw was from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

At 109,000 gross tonnes and 951 feet in length, its a pretty large ship. It holds 2,600 passengers and 1,100 crew. It has 17 decks.

The Golden Princess has 3 pools, both indoor and outdoor. One good feature, both for teens and non-teens is that there is a teen-only sun deck.

Celebrity Solstice Sets Sail

The Celebrity Solstice left the Meyer Werft dockyard in Papenburg Germany this week. It travelled down the river Ems backwards, which is what is going on in this shot.

Celebrity Solstice

The Solstice is massive: it is 1,033 feet long and 122,000 (!) tonnes. It has a capacity of 2,850 passengers.

When it undocked from Papenburg, there were apparently 100,000 onlookers as it travelled down the river.

One standout of the Solstice is it has a “Lawn Club” which, like the name implies, is a live lawn up on the top deck.  If you’ve ever wanted to have a picnic or play Bocce while on a cruise ship, and really who hasn’t, the Lawn Club is there.

Here’s a video of it leaving Papenburg.

Rhapsody of the Seas - Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship in Vancouver

A grey Vancouver day and the Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas is at Canada Place getting ready to head off to Alaska.

The Rhapsody’s maiden voyage was in 1997. Most of the time it sails out of ports along the Gulf Coast to the Western Caribbean, but like many other ships it hits Alaska in the summer.

It’s 915 feet in length and weighs 78,491 tonnes. It holds 765 crew and 2,435 passengers.

Rhapsody of the Seas has a retractable canopy and an indoor/outdoor pool with a sliding roof.

It also has a cool rock climbing wall that you can see at the end of the video.

If you’ve been on the Rhapsody of the Seas or any other Royal Caribbean cruise, leave a comment and let us know how you liked it.

Update: Over on Youtube, jazzamcc pointed out that I made a mistake.  Rhapsody of the Seas now sails out of Australia & New Zealand from October - April.  Thanks a lot!

Sun Princess in Vancouver On World Tour

Here is the Princess Cruises Sun Princess ship waiting to head to Alaska here in Vancouver. However, this is not a normal Vancouver - Alaska cruise.

The Sun Princess is the sister of the Dawn Princess and the Sea Princess.  It was built in 1995.

The most critical fact you need to know is that it was the setting for the 1998 TV show Love Boat: The Next Wave starring the incomperable Robert Urich.

At 77,000 tonnes and 857 feet it is not the largest Princess ship (anymore).

The Sun Princess is permanently based in Australia, sailing out of Sydney in the winter and Melbourne in the summer.

You might ask what an Australian based ship is doing in Vancouver?

It’s in the middle of a 75 night “Grand Pacific World Cruise”. Among other stops, it goes from Sydney to Hawaii, to San Francisco, then Victoria and Vancouver, then up to Alaska, then over to Japan, China, Vietnam, down to Singapore, and then finally back to Sydney.

Have you been on a cruise that long? I can’t imagine it personally.  Leave a comment with what you think about that, or if you have been on the Sun Princess or any other Princess ship.

As a bonus, here is the theme to Love Boat: The Next Wave.  Quality Television!

Holland America Statendam Docked For Alaska

Here is the Holland American Statendam in Vancouver docked at Canada Place.

Holland America Statendam At Vancouver Going To Alaska
by dockedcruise The Statendam was built in 1993 and the current one is actually the 5th Holland America ship to be named the Statendam.

It’s 720 feet long and 55,451 gross tonnes. In the winter it does somewhat unique trips like Australia and New Zealand, but in the summer you know where it goes - Alaska! (Where else?).

It holds 1258 pasengers and 557 crew, and is known for its art collection. It has a “Van Gogh Theatre” and a 26′ high sculpture.

Looks like Google Maps likes the Statendam too, as it caught it docked in Lyttleton New Zealand
